Newcomers and veterans alike are invited to join a Summer Intensive that is part of our Teacher Training program. In these two blocks, you will experience the dramatic activities that nourish Waldorf students from grades 1 to 8.

Whether you intend to learn more about Waldorf education, to deepen your knowledge of the curriculum, or simply to renew your life forces through artistic experiences, you will find joy and inspiration by immersing yourself in the arts.

Drama in the Waldorf curriculum

Drama is at the heart of Waldorf Education. The children look forward with excitement and enthusiasm to the annual class play. It focuses the class and helps the students grow in self confidence, expression and empathy calling on essential life talents and skills.

Come and learn how to work with drama in the classroom in this engaging five day course from two Waldorf drama experts!


Aug 13 to 17 (Tue to Sat), 2024.

We will explore the following topics to build up your teaching capacity:

  • Circle to Soliloquy: The child’s dramatic journey
  • Drama in practise
  • Creating theatre with children
  • Realising an age appropriate script
  • Building stage presence

Course tutors

Martin Schmandt

Martin has extensive class teaching experience and is a professional artist.

USA, Martin Schmandt worked as a class teacher in two Waldorf schools in the USA and UK for over 20 years. In the recent decade, he has also started mentoring Waldorf teachers in various countries. In addition to teaching, he is passionate and experienced about working with teachers and adults in art.

He joined Island Waldorf School in 2022 as Education Coordinator, a role in which he supports and coordinates the development of pedagogical excellence throughout the entire school.

Martin holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Temple University.

Philip Beaven

Philip began his career as a eurythmist and went on to become a Waldorf class teacher.

Philip completed a 4-year Eurythmy Diploma in London in 1979. After a short spell teaching children, his interests in the performing arts took over. For 26 years he worked at various times as eurythmist, actor, storyteller, dancer, puppeteer and director touring all over Europe and the US.

After co-founding and teaching at the Academy of Living Movement in Vienna in 2003, he rediscovered his love of teaching children and took a class of children from grade 1 through 8 at the oldest Steiner school in the UK. He moved to Hong Kong and joined Island Waldorf School in September 2018.

Philip holds a Master of Arts degree in Advanced Theatre Practice from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
