This painting course of study has been created to give students a thorough basis for creating imagery utilizing the three major elements of visual design, with an emphasis on color and its four dynamic properties.
With practice and patience, students will learn a creative and systematic approach in which to develop a personal and unique style of creating imagery from start to finish.
Join us from July 13 to 14, 2024, 9 am to 5 pm!

First Day – July 13, 2024
- Discussion of the four properties of color: hue, value, intensity and temperature
- Discussion of the basic color harmonies – monochromatic, analogous, complementary and neutrals
- Pastel exercises illustrating the four qualities in various formulaic combinations
- Pastel exercises illustrating the basic color harmonies
- Monochromatic hues with value & temperature changes (primarily with reds/blues)
- Analogous colors with changes in brightness/dullness brought on by addition of complementary hues to dull down chroma as compared to primary hues
- Complementary color exercises working with the four properties of color
- Generate tones & shades of grey.
- Discussion of what value (light & dark) is and its role in creating imagery
- Charcoal exercises showing various formulaic combinations of light-medium-dark value in prescribed landscape illustrations. (9 examples in total)
Second Day – July 14, 2024 (Sun)
-
Combining previous day’s study of color and value exercises, we will utilize the three complementary harmonies placed within the landscape format to create a deeper understanding of how color and value work together to create color moods in a landscape format
- ++ If time allows – value examples can be made to fit into analogous color and monochromatic schemes
- Discussion of composition/form and its decisive role in creating imagery
- Examples of the 3 major elements of composition on board
-
Students will be given color-value-composition formulas used to create landscapes and free form individual images
